Mourning Coffee, founded by vocalist Christian Diana, transforms the pain of being human into art that speaks to the soul, bringing a goth-folk sensibility to the local scene. Through their music, which often includes easy-going vocals, keys, and catchy guitar licks, they aim to show listeners that they are not alone and that something beautiful can come from all the messy emotions that life brings us. The Morristown-based band has released five studio albums, as well as an album of recorded live versions, and countless singles. Now, they’re back with a new song just in time for the warm weather.

The song, “Fight or Flight,” is about the exciting awkwardness that a new and instantly deep connection brings. As Lia Davies and Diana harmonize over sweeping violins and an upbeat guitar riff, listeners are transported into a world of emotion. The two recount a relationship that feels so cosmically right that it deserves a chance, even if taking the chance seems scary. If you’re a sucker for the “will they, won’t they” trope, this is your jam! Listening to the song feels like running in an open field with the wind blowing in your hair, thanks to the breezy violin that appears throughout the track. The drums, performed by Tommy Riley, keep the track steady while the guitar provides the danceability. And, of course, you can’t discuss “Fight or Flight” without shouting out Rita Rosiek’s killer guitar tone, sharp and bright.
"It’s always nerve-racking meeting someone new in the beginning; passions are high, but there’s also the chance of being ghosted and forgotten. This song explores all these feelings, from the delusional and hopeful to the grounded and realistic. Even the idea of romanticizing the person before fully getting to know them, which almost always leads to disaster." - Christian Diana, Mourning Coffee
With a little help from their friends, namely producer Sam Stauff and aforementioned guest violinist and vocalist Davies, Mourning Coffee has crafted a catchy and relatable spring tune that is undoubtedly a great teaser for their upcoming project. The band often performs around the tri-state and beyond. If you liked “Fight or Flight,” be sure to catch them next on April 25th at Art House Productions in Jersey City, New Jersey, to hear it live!
LONG STORY SHORT: Mourning Coffee’s “Fight or Flight” describes the universal feelings that occur when you get deep with someone fast, and find yourself in the awkward phase of wondering where you stand with them. Over violins, vocalist Christian Diana urges the other person not to say goodbye to the connection between them until they see where it goes. It’s a relatable journey through love.
