About "Proud"
"Proud" was released earlier this year, but it's gone through a lot of changes since I wrote it, in terms of arrangement. It started out slightly more uptempo, just voice and acoustic guitar. My partner Eric encouraged me to go for a more moody arrangement, given the nature of the material, and its been cool playing it live with synths, piano, electric guitar and this much slower tempo. For the On the MIC performance, we stripped it down even further to just synth and electric guitar, which I really enjoyed. The song was written at a time when I was processing a lot of shame around my desperation in looking for a romantic partner, feeling pretty down about some unrequited loves, and generally just acknowledging the ways I self-sabotage, while not being willing to change my behavior. I am planning to record and re-release this song for my debut EP next year, but in the meantime, check out the studio version, streaming on Spotify and other streaming platforms." -Emily Jeanne Brown
